This week, I’d like to talk about cybersecurity. If you’re not familiar with what cybersecurity is exactly, it’s the protection of internet-connected systems such as software, data, and hardware from online threats.
The world has become smaller with all kinds of information available thanks to websites and the internet. Most people spend their time on the internet and securing your website from hacks and malicious activities is a must.
What are the pieces of cybersecurity?
- Application security
- Information or data security
- Network security
- Disaster recovery/business continuity planning
- Operational security
- Cloud security
- Critical infrastructure security
- Physical security
- End-user education
I’d like to focus on 2 points and they are disaster recovery and application security.

One of the easiest and quickest ways to recover from an unavoidable disaster is to make scheduled backups of your website. Based on my experience, it is the most practical way of recovering from a hack.
My go-to plugin of choice for WordPress backups is UpdraftPlus. It’s uncomplicated and quick to set up for backups and restorations.
A big plus for me with UpdraftPlus is that it doesn’t use proprietary file formats so I can download a backup and restore it on my computer or on a different server altogether.
As for application security, one of the first plugins that I install whenever I develop a WordPress site is Wordfence. In my opinion, it’s one of the best security plugins for WordPress, and it has tons of features to boot!
Wordfence will monitor your site for any malicious attempts on your site and protect it from those attempts.
It will send you a list of addresses that have attempted to hack your site, which I then use to block them from accessing my sites again.
This plugin will also send you weekly notifications on updates you can do and a security summary of your website. Which is a great overview of what needs to be done to your site in order to secure it.
Have a safe site!
